Tyrrell Clarke, BFA
Tyrrell Clarke is an Alberta artist who got her feet wet for travel early on in life as the daughter of a Canadian military pilot. Many moves later she settled in Alberta and was primarily based in Calgary where she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts, and has spent the past few years exploring life in the surrounding towns of Cochrane and High River.Tyrrell loves to create spaces, so she opened up artist run galleries in all three locations where she showcased her latest paintings, and hosted many other wonderful artists. These days she is concentrating on painting in her new “garage mahal” studio and her work can be found in various galleries throughout Southern Alberta.
When people talk about Tyrrell’s paintings they have to talk about colour. She is not afraid of colour. Vivid jewel tones and subtle glazes seduce the viewer into experiencing her subject almost emotionally, drawing them in. She is in love with flowers, and there is always a fresh bouquet in the studio as her muse. She moves from huge vibrant five foot flower paintings to figurative works and landscape, mostly abstracted, and often about being in love.
There is also an evolving stream of spiritual paintings on her easel. She claims she is “visited” by the spirit of the painting in some cases, and her website is peppered with powerful Shaman paintings and images of the ancient art of tarot .This is an ongoing series that will eventually be made into a tarot deck.
Then there are the bees. Tyrrell is becoming known for her bee paintings that originally came about to “fertilize” her big flower paintings. What started out playfully to accessorize the flowers quickly became about the beauty and necessity of the bees, and they took on more importance as a subject. The plight of the bees is paramount right now, and Tyrrell’s bees create a buzz of conversation and awareness wherever they show.
