Bio:
Karen began painting seriously in the mid 1970’s and in 2013 she was able to paint fulltime. Her education in art has included the Red Deer College Summer Series, evening classes at the Alberta College of Art and Design. She has attended numerous workshops with notable Canadian and American instructors along with self-directed study. Karen moved to Carstairs Alberta in 2000 where she has a home studio.
She believes that art is a continuous process of learning and one of the best ways of observing and studying nature firsthand is to paint plein air (painting outdoors)
Karen enjoys working in a variety of mediums but primarily works in oils for the immediacy of an ‘alla prima’ technique; when painting with acrylics and other water media she prefers to build the painting by applying multiple glazes creating a depth to the surface and image. She loves to interpret the landscape around her by using her imagination when creating a piece. Whatever the medium, her focus is to achieve a quality of movement, form, and light drawing the viewer in.
Karen is an active member of the Cochrane Art Club, Beaupre Artist Guild, Leighton Centre, Riverview Artists and the Federation of Canadian Artists.
